(supposed to be) the abstract

This paper aims to focus on the theme ‘island’ as an isolated piece of land in relation to psychology and creativity. It aims to analyze the idea of island, as a water surrounded piece of land, where water can be considered as a binder of feelings and thoughts. As a strong and unpredictable element, water shaped the art making besides many things. By asking questions and giving examples with sociological, psychological, artistic references and correspondences, this paper will try to examine the idea of island and isolation in relation to creativity. I will select a term of Carl Jung as a baseline and ask if it’s possible to talk about the creativity under the light of Jung’s collective unconsciousness theory; Can we make a connection between isolation and creativity through the island as a metaphor? If this theory is right and we have a common pool of archetypes and instincts how do these effect creativity, how does it work? Does distance or isolation effect creativity or art making? Can we talk about the benefits of isolation to creativity or vice versa?
(When we say distance, does it just refer to a physical concept? If we accept the body as the place for existence, can a distance between the body and mind be created or does it already occur?)

Key words:creativity, isolation, water, island, psychology,

Humankind exploring the sea travel, brings the world to another level. By building raft and ship, people started to travel via sea and explore new lands. This action makes water a unique weapon in the sense of owning lands by great powers.

It is always related with pshycological, sociological effects. It is a great way of punishment. When we take a look at the history it can be seen that issues such as displacement, to be excluded from society mostly ends up with a story in which those people are sent to a deserted island. The fact that a deserted island is surrounded by water and it can not be reached to or be freed from without a water carriage, makes water a great seperator. It is known that during the Ottoman period Prince Islands were used as isolation and quarentine places. There is a deeply sad historical incident taking place during Stalin’s time at 1933 known as Nazino Affair. 6000 people were going to be deported from country and many of them were left to an island which was later named as Death or Cannibal Island, without food, clothes, water but just flour. After a short while most them were death, killed them selves or eaten by the others.  We know the  One of te famous prisons of 19th 20th century was in a French island which was named as (Île du Diable) Devil's Island.

In that sense, it is also a great cinematic influence. An autobiographic book; Papillion (1972)  written by Henri Charrière
, who was once a prisoner in the Devil’s Island and managed to run away was later on adapted to cinema. In this book Charriére writes his memories of escape attemps, adventures, imprisonment and his final escape in 1932. Most of the stories in the book was said to be %75 percent real.
In Shattered Island, which is another book adaptation to cinema (written by Dennis Lehane, Directed by Martin Scorsesse) we see the story of two U.S. Marshalls investigating a psychiatric facility on Shutter Island after one of the patients goes missing.
Tom Hanks in 2002 with the movie Cast Away, a cargo plane crashes in to an uninhabited South Pacific Island and a FedEx employee struggles to survive alone in the island.

Water is the commonest symbol for the unconscious.
" The lake in the valley is the unconscious, which lies, as it were, underneath consciousness, so that it is often referred to as the ‘subconscious’ "says Carl Jung. The term “collective unconscious” that Jung creates, appears in one of his essays for the first time in 1916. Collective Unconscious is a term that he uses to depict the structure of unconscious mind which appears in between the same species. To give an example about human beings, the collective unconscious is formed by universal symbols such as the shadow, water, flood, tree of life etc. which are called as archetypes and instincts. Jung's ideas on archetypes were based in part on Plato's forms, Kant’s categories and Schopenhauer’s prototypes. Jung believes that emotions and feelings are being reflected to the archetypical nature of water. The complexity of human nature, profoundness of its imponderous inner being is mostly represented by water according to Jung.
Also according to Mircea Eliade water has a symbolic role in religion. And he says, the waters rule the beginning and the end of every cosmic and historic cyclic, supposing too, that the waters purify and regenerate because they annual the history. Therefor it is related with birth, death and rebirth

In physics; water is the only substance matter that can be found in three different phases of matter, gas, liquid, solid.  According to Masaru Emoto, water molecules have a memory. It can record feelings, thoughts, actions. All type of actions leave a mark on a water molecule which can be identified. To give an example; during his researches Emoto leaves a glass of water into a room where people are swearing and acting angry. After this session, a scan photo under a microscope shows; the water molecules transform into an embroiled, irregular heterogenous structure and change. In another session, a group of people who think and say beautiful things to a glass of water such as gratitude, love etc. and the microscopic scan of those water molecules are homogenous. The molecules transform in to various perfect geometrical shapes and they become regular. Dr Masaru Emoto, wrote  books  “The Hidden Messages in Water” and “The True Power of Water”, which describe the effect of positive affirmations on water molecules. In the movie “What the Bleep we know” Emoto’s researches are mentioned. But what Dr. Emoto says as a hypothesis hasn’t proved yet by any scientist yet he denied to do his researches again and compare the results

%96,  %71,  %65; these are the percentages of water in cucumber, earth and human body.
Water, is one of the four elements that can surround a living creature along with air. No other element shaped our world more than water. This element consists a huge part of lithosphere enabling life to emerge, forming civilizations, being a way for exploring new lands and shaping lands by it’s natural power and many more. Water was and still is highly vital. It is the reason for beginning of the life on planet earth as we know it and it’s the most essential element along with air. A human being can live without food for 3 weeks but for water this is just 3 days.

Before the birth, every human being in a womb is surrounded by placenta. Within this placenta there is a woman’s “water”; which is the amniotic fluid that works as protective liquid. In the beginning this amniotic fluid is mainly water with electrolytes. However by about the 12-14th week it is transformed to contain proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, phospholipids, and urea. All of which are necessary for the growth of the fetus. Basically life starts by water and it is the most essential substance  to stay alive.

Circulating/ urinary system; Water in our body carries oxygen and nutrients to cells. It is the flush of the body to send the wastes out. ...

Throughout the history; all kinds of living and settling down stories are built around the existence of water. Our earliest ancestors who used to be hunters looking for food and water, discovered that agriculture is only possible by the existence of permanent water. They decided to settle down in a constant place around water and afterwards civilizations started to emerge. It is believed that the first civilization was formed about 5000 BC when humans started a settled life along the Nile’s banks, the longest river on earth.

In the history of the world we see water as a strong element being associated with various notions, feelings and emotions. Even if it slightly differs from land to land, water is mainly associated with healing and purification by all.

In most religions water is being referred as purifier. Water itself and some of the water sources are accepted by many religions as sacred or healing. Water Baptism in Christianity can be stated as an example for that. According to Christianity, believers are baptized and purified by holy water. Holy water is also believed to bless people, places, and objects. Besides Christianity, water is considered as a spiritual cleanser in many religious forms like Sikhism. According to Islamic mythology, God let Zamzam water flow from His Spring, to end Abraham’s son Ismael’s thirst.
Water is taking place strongly in “Other world” depictions.

%96, %71,  %60; these are the percentages of water in cucumber, earth and human body.

Water, is one of the four elements that can surround a living creature along with air. Throughout the  human history all kinds of living, settling down stories are combined around the existence of water.  About 5000 BC it is believed that humans started living along the Nile's banks.--Gobeklitepe!--
All along the history in each part of the world, water is a strong element referring different notions, feelings and emotions. From land to land in art, religion, philosophy, literature it has been used as a symbol of change, purity, cleansing, freedom etc.
Also, used for punishment, violence and torture.
On the other hand, it is a sign of emotions; when a person is so sad, happy or stressed, it appears as tear and/or sweat. Is a potential weapon to end the life on earth and due to the global warming, it is a future weapon to give a fight for the sake of it, to stay alive.
And today in a different context, it is a hope for many people to pass the water and find a place that they can call as home again.
In this essay, I would like to research the relation between water and thoughts, feelings in art depictions.
